A recent study published inJAMAandPharmacotherapyreveals that the treatment of herpes simplex varicella-zoster virus (HSV) in pregnant women can lead to a reduction in the incidence of neonatal varicella and neonatal herpes, with little difference between the two groups in the mother and her partner.
A meta-analysis of 16 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that examined the efficacy of valacyclovir (Valtrex) and famciclovir (Famvir) in the prevention of HSV neonatal varicella and neonatal varicella-zoster virus infection among mothers of postpartum or preterm infants. A total of 44 studies were included and were randomized to groups: 2 of the RCTs, the other 3 were RCTs that compared the 2 groups; 2 of the RCTs, the other 3 were RCTs that compared the 2 groups, the RCTs did not have any data on any of the groups. The results show that the risk of neonatal HSV was significantly reduced in the Valtrex group compared with the placebo group; however, in the Famvir group compared with the placebo group, the rate of HSV infection was significantly reduced; and in the Valtrex group compared with the placebo group, there was no difference in the rates of HSV infection among the mothers of preterm infants.
The authors concluded that the results of the study do not suggest that valacyclovir is more effective than famciclovir in the prevention of HSV neonatal varicella and neonatal varicella-zoster virus infection in the postpartum or preterm infants. They suggested that further study is needed to confirm the results.
The authors also noted that the use of valacyclovir in pregnant women is associated with the risk of neonatal herpes, including neonatal herpes infection. They also noted that the use of famciclovir in preterm infants does not appear to affect the risk of neonatal herpes. They also wrote that the use of valacyclovir in preterm infants may be associated with the risk of neonatal herpes.
As a result of the results of the meta-analysis, the authors recommended that more studies be conducted to determine the efficacy and safety of valacyclovir and famciclovir in the prevention of HSV neonatal varicella and neonatal varicella-zoster virus infection in the preterm and postpartum infants.
The authors further advised that further studies are needed to clarify the effects of valacyclovir and famciclovir in the prevention of HSV neonatal varicella and neonatal varicella-zoster virus infection in the preterm and postpartum infants.
